11 Augustus 2014 | Singapore, Singapore

Since I still had a week off this week, I explored the city with some people. Some people that I already knew, but more often new people too. I spend most of the time with the people from my hostel. The people at the hostel are very nice and come from different places around the world (more than 20 different nationalities). It’s a big group and there’s always someone who will join you for dinner or to a party, or to explore the city with.

Last week I got to know the different sides of Singapore, like little India, Chinatown, Marina Bay, but also the business district. The beautiful thing about Singapore, is that these areas do not look alike at all. Each time you get out of the MRT, it feels like you’re in a different part of the world! On Sunday, we took the boat to go to the islands St. John’s and Kusu. These are two tropical islands that belong to Singapore and are within 45 minutes travelling by boat. Here, we chilled a bit, and at Kusu we even saw our first wild monkeys since our stay. Also, there was a little temple on a hill where you could pray for luck and leave a message.

In addition to that, I also got to explore nightlife in Singapore. Since alcohol in bars and clubs is very expensive, it is customary to pre-drink (even if it’s right in front of the bar or club) and to go in after. In this way, you can enjoy your night out, while spending relatively low amounts of money.

On August 8th, it was Singapore’s birthday. This year, they celebrated their 49 year independence from Malaysia. During the day, there was a military parade (which was only visible for paying audience), paratroopers jumped out of a helicopter, and military planes flew over. The disadvantage of this all was that there was no real schedule, and that we therefore missed most of it. The day was closed with a beautiful fireworks show, but this was only 10 minutes. All in all, the day was a bit disappointing. Luckily, we set things straight at night when we went to a foamparty on the island of Sentosa. Because Singaporeans sure know how to party!

The situation with the Korean guys in my room did not really change. They’re still awfully quiet, and are on their phones the entire time. Two of them sometimes find the courage to talk to me, but the third one is still very shy and barely says a word. We all let each other be, and that’s alright. An annoying habit they do have is that they let their alarm clocks go off several times each morning. I don’t know the purpose of that, but I manage to fall asleep each time so far!
